Day 27 - Book Tunnel

Norfolk Public Library has 210,000 additional volumes on shelves at its Administrative Center in Norfolk's Industrial Park. There's not enough room on the shelves at the NPL branches for the vast collection. All of these are catalogued and can be requested by any patron. This isle has photography, art, architecture and other nonfiction books. Some real special books on these shelves.

Take It, We'll Replace It!

Today's flight home from Orlando took us high above the swirling edge of hurricane Sandy. A bumpy ride indeed with no beverage or snack service left me contemplating the seat pocket library. Canon G1X, 1/10 sec @ f/3.2, ISO 400, in macro mode.

Sunrise

Always love catching the sunrise even when the setting is just a parking lot. That bird like shape in the lower center is actually a reflection from a car windshield and hood. iPhone 4, 1/1000 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 80.

LUV

- LUV is the New York Stock Exchange symbol for Southwest Airlines. The airline once used the tag line "The Somebody Else Up There Who Loves You." I love flying Southwest and apparently many others do Southwest is the largest airline in the United States based on passengers carried in 2010. Jumbo

- The Boeing 747, the original "Jumbo Jet" at the Detroit Airport. This blog post is my first from in-flight Internet. We are zipping along in a boring old 737 at 440 mph at an altitude of 36,658 feet somewhere over the midwest in route to San Francisco. iPhone 4, 1/15 sec @ f/2.8, Camera+ app using the HDR effect.

Really W i d e

- I used my Sigma 8mm F3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye lens for this picture from the hangar overlook facing the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and the Vought Corsair at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. The overlook provides a sweeping view of aircraft hanging throughout the Boeing Aviation Hangar. In photography, a fisheye lens is a wide-angle lens that takes in a broad, panoramic and hemispherical image. They provide a unique, distorted appearance. Canon 7D, 1/25 sec @ f/5.0, ISO 800.

Blackbird Fly

Sunrise Flight

From 2010 Blog
- If you have to be up at sunrise like I did yesterday, might as well take a picture of it. The plane had just taken off from Norfolk at 5:30 on a short flight to New York's LaGuardia Airport. We broke through the cloud cover at about 5000 feet and sun was just coming up so I took this picture though a really nasty airplane window. Pretty happy with the result. Canon G11, 1/329 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 400.

Vacation Sunset

From 2010 Blog
This is the companion sunset picture to the sunrise picture on the February 28th post. I took this one on the same day as the beach sunrise picture. However this was near the end of our trip as our return Southwest flight was beginning to make its descent into Norfolk. I always take pictures from the airplane and they rarely meet my expectations because shooting through the multilayer Plexiglas windows with lots of vibrations make a sharp picture almost impossible. Even though its not super sharp and underexposed, I still liked this image. Canon G10, 1/40 sec @ F/6.3, ISO 400.
