Support Your Local Book Store

- Made a visit today to one of our favorite local bookstores, AFK Books Music & Movies. They sell mostly "like new" books, CDs, DVD,s and an amazing collection of vinyl records. They also buy your old books, tunes and movies. You don't get a lot for them but every bit helps in paying for the new stack we haul back home. Canon Powershot SD870 IS, 1/40 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 200.

Mr. Fix-it

- Robert received his "Li'l Helper" tool kit including PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) from Grammy and Grandpa for Christmas. He immediately decided that something needed fixing so he went to work on the faucet in the shower. He looks just like Handy Manny. Canon PowerShot SD870 IS, 1/60 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 250 with flash.

Point & Shoot

- There's no shortage of cameras in the Sullivan house. This Canon SD870 IS has been Cindy's camera since 2008. It's a great little point & shoot camera. It has contributed six pictures to my photo of the day blog over the past three years. Check out what the SD870 can do. Canon 40D, 1/25 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 800, 100mm macro lens, converted to black & white in Lightroom 3 using Silver Efex Pro 2..

Details, Details, Details

From 2010 Blog
- Regular followers of my blog know that I am a fan of architectural details. While attending Allison and Tom's wedding reception at the Huber Court in the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia, I noticed how the decorator's had placed dramatic up lighting at the base of each column of the side arches. This lighting really brings out the details and textures of stone work. Canon Powershot SD870 IS, 1/20 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 200 in macro mode.

Huber Court

From 2010 Blog
- Huber Court at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk Virginia. Tonight we attended the beautiful wedding of my friend Allison and her husband Tom. The ceremony was outside in the Memorial Garden with wonderful late afternoon sunshine streaming in. The dinner and reception was held in Huber Court which was spectacular in dramatic lighting and flowers. The cake was framed by these stairs and entrance to galleries. Canon Powershot SD870 IS, 1/8 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 250, hand held - a testament to the little point 'n shoot's image stabilization.

Breaking Rules

From 2010 Blog
This photo breaks a number of photography composition rules. It is a portrait oriented landscape photo and the horizon line is almost in the direct center of the image. But I like the image and the constraints of the scene and where it was taken from required "breaking" some rules. This is the morning sun after burning through the fog on a cloudy day. Canon Powershot SD870 IS, 1/125 sec @ f/10.0, ISO 80, 48mm equivalent focal length.

Emerald Eye

From 2010 Blog
This eye shaped opening is at the Gershwin Theatre in NYC home of the Broadway musical Wicked. During our visit to the city last fall we took a Saturday morning tour as part of the Behind The Emerald Curtain program after seeing the play the night before. 330 - Monopoly Plant

From 365 Project
This perennial symbol of the holiday season begins to appear everywhere around Thanksgiving. Until the 1990s, the Ecke family of Encinitas, California, had a virtual monopoly on poinsettias owing to a cultivation secret that made it difficult for others to compete. The secret was discovered and published by a university researcher and the plants are now cultivated by other producers. However, the Ecke family still controls about 70% of the U.S. market and 50% of the worldwide market. - Wikipedia Canon PowerShot SD870 IS, 1/8 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 200, in macro mode.

239 - Down the Drain

From 365 Project
This is a storm drain grate in a Salisbury Maryland parking lot. The parking lot lights cast nice hard shadows creating a scene that caught our eye as we walked by. Canon PowerShot SD870 IS, 1.0 sec @ f/5.6, ISO 200, handheld with a deep breath and good image stabilization.
