The Wells @ Night

The Wells Theatre in Norfolk Virginia, opened on August 27, 1913. The poured-in-place, steel-reinforced concrete structure was technologically advanced for the period. The Wells's ornate decoration made the theatre the flagship of Wells Amusement Enterprises, and continues today as a well preserved example of Beaux-Arts Classicism, a National Historic Landmark and home to the Virginia Stage Company. Canon G11, 1/10 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 400.

Naro @ Night

The Naro Cinema is in the heart, same say it is the heart, of the Ghent Business District along Colley Ave in Norfolk Virginia. Opened as The Colley Theater on Feb 24, 1936, it was a modern suburban theater with the latest amenities, 500 seats including a balcony and an art deco design. Since 1977 it has been operated by Tench Phillips and Thom Vourlas as an independent theater featuring foreign, art and independent films. Recently converted to digital projection, the theater hosted tonight's sneak preview of episode 1 of Downton Abbey season 4 for local PBS station WHRO.

Hall of Presidents

The Hall of Presidents at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom is a very moving and inspirational show and helps put the toughest job in the nation into perspective during these final two weeks of the election season. The peaceful transition of power is still rare in much of world even 215 years after George Washington became the first president to step aside. Canon G1X, 1/3 sec @ f/5.0, ISO 1600.

Playing to an Empty Theatre

Like the talented trumpeter who toots his own horn, I wound up playing to an empty theatre. Norfolk's Chrysler Hall and it's fairly rare "Continental" seating layout with isles only on the sides. Canon ELPH 110 HS, 1/13 sec @ f/2.7, ISO 160.

Panties in a Twist???

- The NORVA in Norfolk Virginia presents Hampton Roads fist ever all women's sketch comedy review, Panties in a Twist. I must admit, the marquee caught my eye today. Canon G11, 1/80 sec @ f/8.0, ISO 200.

Not an Egg

- Tis is not an egg. It's the domed ceiling at the Landmark Theater in Richmond Virginia. " Formerly known as "The Mosque," the Landmark was constructed in 1926 by the Shriners as the ACCA Temple Shrine. The theater was designed in Moorish Revival style by Marcellus Wright, Sr. in association with Charles M. Robinson and Charles Custer Robinson. Canon 7D, 1/10sec @ f/3.5, ISO 800, 8mm fisheye lens.

Emerald Eye

From 2010 Blog
This eye shaped opening is at the Gershwin Theatre in NYC home of the Broadway musical Wicked. During our visit to the city last fall we took a Saturday morning tour as part of the Behind The Emerald Curtain program after seeing the play the night before. Canon PowerShot SD870 IS, 1/20 sec @ f/4.0, ISO 200.

351 - Curves

From 365 Project
The elegant curves of the mezzanine and balcony at the Sandler Center for the Preforming Arts in Virginia Beach. Virginia. I was looking up from my seat in the right orchestra while waiting for Michael McDonald to come on stage. The Sandler Center is a beautiful building with great acoustics. Canon G10, 1/10 sec @ F/2.8, ISO 200 hand held, a testament to the built-in image stabilization on this camera. Converted to B&W in Photoshop Elements 6 with the Silver Efex Pro filter.
