Day 34 - 1947

This photo of my mother-in-law, Norma Garrett, was taken in 1947 by my father-in-law, Carlton Garrett. She was 19 years old and they had been married less than year. Carlton was an amateur photographer and would spend the next 67 years documenting their relationship and family. I’ve spent time recently pouring through his archive to document Norma’s beautiful life for her memorial service.

There’s a lot I like about this photograph, the lighting, the composition, her expression, the way she’s holding her hand, and of course that dress and those fabulous pearls.

Day 33 - February 2, 2009, Louis Cousins

I took the top photo of Louis Cousins at Maury High School in Norfolk Virginia on February 2, 2009, at a ceremony honoring the 50th anniversary of the Norfolk 17. These were the first black students to attend formerly all white public schools in the city. The second photo comes from the Ledger Star newspaper in 1959. It is a powerful photo of the 15-year old Cousins sitting alone in the Maury High auditorium awaiting his home room assignment. White students can be seen in the background maintaining their distance from the only black student in the school.

Louis Cousins passed away in January 2020 but his legacy and that of his fellow Norfolk 17 pioneers live on.

Day 31 - Mom

Today’s picture of the day honors my beloved mother-in-law, Norma Garrett who passed away on January 31, 2024 at age 95. The picture shows her beautiful smile and playful nature. Taken in 2015 at the age of 87, you can see the then new Slover Library bought out the little girl in her.
Rest in peace mom, we miss you.
